Second man arrested in Alberta train derailment

EDMONTON — RCMP have arrested a second man for the derailment of a CN Rail freight train more than 18 months ago in the Edmonton area.

Ian Douglas Gillie, 26, was arrested without incident by Edmonton police on Jan 20.

The 85-car train slammed into an 11,000-kilogram piece of construction equipment that was stolen, driven across a farmer's field and parked on the tracks in Strathcona County on July 10, 2008.

The train knocked the machine from the tracks and cleared a highway overpass before 13 cars derailed.

No one was hurt.

RCMP allege two men were drinking when they stole the equipment and parked it on the tracks.

Gillie is charged with mischief over $5,000 that endangered life, theft over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000.

He and co-accused Edward Arthur Vallee, 26, will appear in provincial court in Sherwood Park on Feb. 3.
