Day of Mourning - April 28th

TCRC Message   Westray   Bill C-45    Right To Refuse!   Record Your Right to Refuse

Dear Brother/Sisters,

On April 28th Canada will observe the National day of Mourning which commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace hazards and incidents.

On December 1990, with Parliament passing of the “Workers Mourning Day”, April 28th was officially recognized as the National Day of Mourning. April 28th, was picked because on that day in 1914 the Workers Compensation Act received its third reading.

Since its inception, the observance has spread to over 80 countries around the world commonly referred to as Workers Memorial Day.

Workers and employees observe this day in various ways including lighting candles, donning ribbons, wearing black armbands and observing moments of silence.

The purpose of the National Day of Mourning is twofold; to remember and honour those lives lost or injured and to renew the commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace to prevent further deaths, injuries and diseases from work.

On April 28th, 2011, your National Officers will be observing a moment of silence at 10:00 a.m. and we encourage and request that the Membership, where and when possible, join us in our recognition of the National Day of Mourning and our fellow workers.

Fraternally yours,

Rex Beatty
President – TCRC
