Distributed Power Survey

TCRC Sisters and Brothers,

CN Rail (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) have been granted an exemption, of short term duration, by Transport Canada with respect to the RAILWAY FREIGHT AND PASSENGER TRAIN BRAKE INSPECTION RULES under sections 7.2 (b) and 7.3 of this rule. This exemption will allow CN and CP to operate Distributed Power (DP) trains with a combined air flow not exceeding ninety (90) cubic feet per minute (CFM), but at no time exceeding sixty (60) CFM on any locomotive in a DP train configuration.

The TCRC National Office is requesting the membership submit the online form or fax the information, on the attached document, when working in DP train operation. The information submitted will give us an indicator of how this exemption affects overall train handling and air braking when operating DP trains with an increased brake pipe air flow of combined 90 CFM. All information submitted will be treated in strict confidence and the findings will be compiled into a general brief for Transport Canada.
